painting underwater bubbles on paint tool SAI by oddsocket painting underwater bubbles on paint tool SAI by oddsocket
A new and updated version of my now old as balls bubble tutorial. Now with shinier bubble and section on cel shading (and magical glow!).

I hope you all have fun making bubbles, if you use my tutorial please do link me to what you made because I'd love to see it!

All feedback appreciated. :)

Here are a couple of pictures where I used these bubble-drawing methods, if you'd like to see them in context: Old Art Re-Redraw - Vaporeon Morph by Electrical-Socket Beluga Mermaid by Electrical-Socket

I really needed this!
Thank you so much!
Now I have less fear of making a drawing I had in mind.
(Though I'm still new to Sai so it might not be as great as these. xp)

Are you working on a darker coloured background than your bubble itself? The technique I use in the tutorial is optimised for use against a backdrop darker than the bubble. The luminosity setting should make the layer brighter than what's behind it, and if you're using a light background that'll make your bubble rather hard to see!

Yes, i'm doing the exact same thing as in your tutorial. Also my brush is really weird, it sets multiply stripes in a really ugly way but i've never changed anything in it's settings. I'm new to paint tool SAI btw so i'm sorry for sounding dumb :/

You don't sound dumb at all - it was the only thing I could think of that would cause the entire thing to vanish. If you like, you could note me a screenshot of what's happening with your multiply brush and I could see if I could figure out what's going wrong? It certainly seems like SAI's working in an unusual way!

This is great!! I have a question though, how did you blur it? Whenever I use my blur tool it just colours everything in airbrush style.

Thank you very much!

What it sounds like is that you're using a blur tool that's set to slightly too large a size - try turning down the brush size so it doesn't blur the colour all the way into the centre. :) Hopefully that'll work!

sorry if i sound dumb, im a paint tool sai newbie, but how do you shade with multiply layers? :0

You don't sound dumb at all, everyone starts off not knowing about layer modes, haha.

Basically, when you make a new layer, in the layer pane you'll see the Preserve Opacity/Clipping Group/Selection Source buttons. Just above those, there's a dropdown box labelled "Mode", and the mode will be set to Normal.

If you click the dropdown, you'll get all the other layer modes! Multiply will be among them right at the top. When it's set to Multiply, any stroke or colour you lay down will layer over the layer below and darken it in various ways depending on the colour you're using.

I hope that was an adequate explanation? If there's anything else you'd like to know - whether about Multiply, other layer modes, or SAI use in general, feel free to ask some more! c:

Is it coming out as very bright white strokes? If so, you need to either use a lighter touch, or turn down the opacity of the layer. :) I can't promise a video version of this tutorial, but I will see if I can make that happen for you! Depends if I can get my recording software to play nice with me, haha.
