So, we're a week post-Pearpocalpyse.

Honestly? That is the most fun I've had with a deviantART April Fool's in the decade or so I've been using this site. So much user participation! So many pears! There was some legitimately sweetass artwork people made for this event, which is mindblowing, like, Biting Pear fanart being that amazing is both hilarious and kind of great. I hope that ursulav enjoyed seeing all the fanart of her pear as much as we enjoyed putting it out there!

Also, hello to the (slightly startling) number of new watchers I gained over the Pear Day and the days thereafter! I did not expect my pear familiar to garner so much attention in such a tiny span of time, but damn if I'm not flattered! (I also must tell you that the little dude will not be forgotten, I have every intention of making it into a familiar for a plant wizard so it'll live on evermore.)

If you made any pear art of your own, I would love to see it! It was really fun to be part of all of this. And if you didn't, feel free to introduce yourself or tell me something cool you know because I want to get to know you guys! (This goes for longtime watchers too, I do not remotely talk with you enough!)

I'm curious: do any of you play D&D? I've taken an interest recently and love hearing about people's characters or stories from their campaigns. Hopefully I'll be able to find a group of my own soon! :D

Hey guys! Just wanted to apologise for the sudden disappearance of my Daily Pokémon Doodle schedule - I meant to have lots up on Monday but had to go do some extra Work Work. I may or may not be on a kind of sporadic upload schedule for a little while because Work Work, but I intend to get Ledyba and Ledian finished real soon!

In the mean time, my Johto Pokémon experience will have to be limited to trying to find a Mareep on Pokémon Go! I want one so baaaad ;A; (So glad gen 2 is out now! I already have a Sneasel so I'm a very happy being. C: )
It feels good as hell to be back!!

Apologies to all my watchers for the length of my absence - brainbugs got me well and truly down, but this year has seen the return of my old enthusiasm and general zest for drawing stuff and I'm having so much fun with the Daily Pokemon Doodle!!

I'm trying not to pressure myself with too many goals for this year, but there are a few things I'd like to be doing, I think:

- Carry on with the Daily Pokémon Doodle (updating every Saturday and Monday - so far so good with that!)
- FINALLY get the adoptables account back on the road??? (90% ready to do this, it's just a few final awkward fussy bits needing doing and my ADHD has decided those fussy bits are very, very hard to focus on)
- Make a Redbubble, maybe? (got a few Pokémon images that would make neat stickers and a few cool ideas for shirt designs, but we'll see!)
- Draw more creatures and monster folks! (I'm rusty at drawing humanoids and also wanna practice my clothing/creature design skills)

We'll see how it goes, though. Mainly, I'm just happy to have my enthusiasm back. It's nice to sit around for a few hours listening to The Adventure Zone while I draw.
Hey guys! I hope you've all been having a lovely holiday season!

So, those of you who've been watching me for a while might remember this thing I said in late 2015 about how I'd 'probably start the Johto edition of the DPD in the new year'?

And those of you who remember that might have thought that, welp, guess that ain't happening! After all, 'the new year' a.k.a 2016 is pretty much over.

But I meant it. I vowed to myself that 2016 would see the return of the DPD, and it is back! The fact that it is the final day of 2016 is neither here nor there.

It is time for me to take you all on a tour of what is, let's be real, one of the best regions. The first Pokédoodle of Johto will be posted later today, and I'll be slogging my way through the next 100 at the fastest pace I can manage (hopefully at least 2 a week). I could not be looking more forward to it, the second generation games are hands-down my favourites and it's exciting to have all these Pokémon lined up to draw that are all very close to my heart. c:

So yeah!! The DPD is back in business! New year, new region! Any Gen 2 Pokémon you're looking forward to seeing? :D

- Socket
Aww, now my page isn't all pretty any more. :C

I dunno why my boxes finally gave up the ghost maybe half a year after my premium ran out. Aww. I guess I'll just have to come up with a fancy new ID image to make up for it in the mean time.

Anyway! I now have significantly more time on my hands than I used to, and that means I am actually in a position to Make More Stuff! No longer am I trying to juggle artwork with Work Work to such a degree. It's nice and a good time.

In that spare time, I've been hammering away at a new adoptable species for the revival of :iconnerblesocks-adopts:, which I'm very excited to release into the world!! They've been in the works for a ridiculously long time (like, the first one I ever drew was way back in my 2015 daily doodle book, I believe) and at last almost all the info sheets and knick-knacks are ready. Aaaa! :D

I'm also thinking of taking up special effects fantasy who knows, after Christmas maybe you'll be seeing some of that as well! It's something I've been interested in for like...ten years, but never really had the time or money to try out. Perhaps instead of just drawing the creatures...I can become the creatures...

See you all around and I hope life's treating you guys alright. <3

still not dead! still livin!

Sat Sep 3, 2016, 12:58 PM

Yo friends and watchers and friends who are also watchers!

I know. My absence has been long. I've made many an 'I'm back!' announcement, and then vanished into the ether again because of debilitating GenderFeels(tm) juggled with being a Working Human With A Job. And I apologise!

But I'm still here, still kickin', and you know what? Maybe this is it this time - maybe this is the time I come back and shower you in Pokémon fanworks and weird dragons. Certainly don't rule it out. I've got lots of works in progress cooking up, and it won't be long until I have a few ready to release into the wild! In the mean time, have a lil preview of something I'm working on at the moment.

See you around, guys! Hope you're all doing alright.

Yo guys. I'm alive, I swear.

Wed Apr 20, 2016, 3:54 PM

I'm so sorry for my continued absence - every time I think I'm gonna be back, I'm...not back. It sucks! But I want to be back.

I'll be straight-up with you folks: life is giving me a heck of an unfun time. Not life in general - my job's going well enough, no big life events to speak of - just one very extended wrangle with gender identity type problems. It's very hard to focus on getting art finished when your brain is going, 'No, dude, dude, you've got to be ANXIOUS about GENDER right now!!! You don't know what you are! This is important!'

It's not even remotely important, but my brain has a way of being immensely distracting.

So mainly I've been making lots and lots and lots of sketch sheets that I never quite finish. I'm sorry about that! But the good news is that I HAVE been using those sketches to draft some advance roughs of the next round of the Daily Pokemon Doodle, and I'm feeling good about those roughs. Even if I can't muster the focus to finish any Big Art Pieces right now, I think cramming a couple hours every few days into a Johto monster doodle is something I'll soon be able to handle. I know a lot of you followed me during the DPD, and I love the DPD a lot and can't wait to bring it back.

So watch this space - I'll do my best to get back making art for you guys soon. I appreciate your patience and I hope to be back to full arty power soon! :)

...I mean, I already had an Instagram. I just forgot to tell you guys.

I'm @socketdork (for those whose eyes may have skimmed over the link text, haha).

I know my upload schedule has been totally up the wall since I got my job, so I thought I'd put it out there - I often post photos of sketches I'm working on and progress pictures long before the completed artwork hits dA. If you'd like to see behind the scenes, so to speak, my Instagram is the place to go for that stuff. There also sketches that never quite make it to dA at all!

It also has occasional photos of my face, which I hope you can forgive me for if you're there for the art, haha.

Do any of you guys have Instagram? Comment me your username and I'll check you out and likely follow - I don't really follow that many people and could do with more to see!

- Socket

some of you either
a) are folks from real life or who talk to me outside dA (how dare you, stop voting you're skewing the results ahaha)
b) have followed me for WAY TOO LONG (like when was the last time i mentioned my "real" name on this account??)
c) went on my art facebook before i realised the name was still on it
d) .......have really uncanny guessing abilities, what the Heck

like for real are you just exceptional guessers or??

Hi guys!

Well, it appears that I kind of monumentally suck at working my art work around my work work. So much work in that sentence, wow.

So I thought I'd drop by to let you all know I'm alive, I am still drawing, so on and so forth! I will admit, it's mainly been sketch pages - I've not been able to summon the focus for much finished/polished drawing in my spare time. But I've done quite a lot of sketches!

With that said, I'm wondering - would you folks rather wait for me to start putting out proper finished pictures, or should I colour up my sketches more often and post them in my gallery to give you something to look at until I'm able to summon my drawing zone again? And given that they're just sketches, feel free to drop suggestions of things you'd like to see! I can't promise I'd draw everything and/or anything, but I'd like to at least make up for my absence a bit by making some things specifically for you.

So yeah! Throw some doodle suggestions my way, let me know if you'd like to see some coloured sketches until I'm able to Do The Draw again!

(And how're you guys doing over the holidays?)

re: absence (sorry again, guys)

Thu Oct 15, 2015, 10:17 AM

Okay, so I've been away for kind of a long while and I really didn't mean to be. I'll probably still be pretty absent for a while longer, and if not, my appearances will likely be sort of patchy and sporadic.

Why? Life stuff, to not put too fine a point on it. Lots of large life occurrences have been happening all at once, and have been consuming lots of my time, or energy, or both. One of the more positive life things is the acquisition of a Real Life Job, which is a pretty big deal for me because I've not actually had one of those before now, so yeah - go Socket, Socket got a job, woo!

The other things, though, are the things I'm gonna have to wait to clear up some before I can give you a reliable 'I'm back!!' message. I really want to have the time and energy to put into my art again soon, because I miss having that motivation awfully and the sooner I can wrangle it back, the better.

Thank you all for your patience, I promise I will be back eventually. In the mean time, I hope you're all doing okay in your individual lives and that Halloweenmonth has been treating you kindly and spookily. Love you folks!

Until next time,

- Socket

DeviantArtist Questionnaire

Sat Aug 8, 2015, 11:08 AM

1) How long have you been on DeviantArt?

Counting my previous account, 9 years! I joined when I was 13, and the rest is history.

2) What does your username mean?

My previous username, Electrical-Socket, was the result of an injoke between me and IncreasinglyCoherent. As to not embarrass myself, I don't think I'll elaborate on the details! (My early ship art from when I first made this account may be at least a little bit of a hint towards the meaning.) My shiny new username is the result of wanting something a little more personalised and unique - I am a habitual wearer of odd socks, and 'odd sock' combined with my existing nickname of Socket resulted in the name you see before you now!

3) Describe yourself in three words.

Oh god, I'm awful at these! How about "small gay blob".

4) Are you left or right handed?

5) What was your first deviation?

Ahahaha, time to trot out my old artwork, is it? Well, here you go.

Topaz Blue by Miazzy

Drink it in. Bask in it.

6) What is your favourite type of art to create?

Ooooh, that's hard! As mediums go, I'm a very digital person - I am a slave to ctrl+z. I do most of my artwork and sketching digitally because I like the unlimited freedom I don't get with traditional! Permanence scares me, okay? Subject matter is probably fantasy creatures/monster folk/beasties of all strange sorts. I just love creating or interpreting creatures, be they animal or humanoid. Sculpture is a lesser-known pleasure of mine! I don't have the materials or anywhere to sculpt at this house, but there's something distinctly satisfying about working with clay.

7) If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

Torn between realism, because damn that'd be cool, and manga, because damn I'd make a lot of money, haha!

8) What was your first favourite?

Oh god, okay. Let me go dredge that up from the depths of my first account.

Jar of Dirt by DolphyDolphiana

This is it, apparently! Wow, that puts into perspective just how long ago those movies were.

9) What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

Let me have a look... Pokémon fanart, haha! There's a lot of creature design stuff mixed in there too, but Pokémon fanart prevails.

10) Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

Wow! A difficult choice to make when there are so many amazing creators on this site. I refuse to choose! loish, LiLaiRa, Jeniak, len-yan, Altalamatox and Xamag are all absolutely excellent artists and I can't be made to pick only one.

11) If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

*double pistol fingers and a wink at TennoStoryWriter* Eyyyyyy.

12) How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

Now, come on, you can't give me this question and not expect me to immediately make eyes at IncreasinglyCoherent. What a babe. We literally met here. She has impacted my life in the most profound way, she made the crappy parts of my life bearable and has helped me so much over the years to move towards being the person I want to be.

Also, she gives really good critiques. Lubby, thank you for always being there to point out when I've drawn someone with two left feet or a wonky eye.

13) What are your preferred tools to create art?

Traditionally, I love an A4 sketchbook and all the pens and pencils I can cram into my case. I have a bit of a thing for coloured ballpoints at the moment. Digitally, SAI is my forever software and either my Intuos or our Cintiq works for me! Especially the Cintiq. Oh, how I love it.

14) What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

This is probably sort of weird, but sitting by myself in a car. I think I've been conditioned in some weird Pavlovian way to get in the drawing zone if I'm sat by myself in a parked car with some music on. I don't know if that's 'inspirational', but it's certainly the place I slip into drawing most easily! The effect can be replicated in most small spaces where I don't have access to procrastination tools - I could probably set up a tent in the bedroom and sit in that with the same results, haha!

15) What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

There was this one dA user (who no longer uses the site as far as I'm aware) who used to give my teenage self the most absolutely glowing comments. I didn't deserve them in any way, shape or form. But they made my day every time I received one because they were just such amazing positive comments and I've always been sad that user left the site before I really got a chance to make sure they knew how appreciative I was of that! Little me thrived on that stuff and it just makes me happy that someone would go out of their way to write this tiny nooblet such lovely words of encouragement.

Away to Kitacon!

Thu Jul 30, 2015, 2:55 AM

Sorry for my particularly lengthy absence, guys! I promise I have an excuse. The excuse is Kitacon. I have been sewing for about a week straight.

Basically, IncreasinglyCoherent and I were planning on cosplaying Trucy Wright and Apollo Justice, but we decided against cosplaying this year. Until the other week, when suddenly both of us were struck by the urge to take a cosplay to Kita. We decided on Homestuck again, because god knows we're just the biggest homestuck trashlords. A mad sewing frenzy ensued as Lubby's godtier Jade costume took shape. (I'm just recycling Dave, haha. I'm lazy!)

When I say I've been sewing for a week straight, I'm barely even exaggerating. It's been non-stop pattern-making, pattern-modifying, fabric-buying, sewing, sewing, sewing, sewing. It has been madness. We have been up into the early hours of the morning. We're leaving for the con today, and only finished the costume at about half one this morning. Nobody cried, which is a miracle. I have never felt quite so accomplished.

We still have some snaps to sew onto the costume. I guess that's one for when we settle down at the hotel!

But yeah, that's where I've been - frenziedly sewing together fluffy dog ears (thank you, 15-year-old me, for being such a goddamn furry and sparing me the need to look up any patterns for that) and wrestling with a sewing machine.

I'll be away until Monday at Kita - if anyone who watches me is there, look out for a godtier Jade (Lubby) walking around with either a tiny little Dave or a tiny little Tavros (tiny little me). I don't know if anyone who watches me is there. Yell 'Socket' and that will probably catch my attention!

If we get any good photos, I will throw some in my scraps folder when we get back. I'll probably write a post-con journal. Until then, see ya! c:

- Socket

Thu Jul 16, 2015, 9:21 AM

okay so i finally changed my username

it happened

i did it

you don't even know how many times i've nearly changed it between the time i posted the poll and now but i DID IT

I've put up a deviation featuring one of our original creatures, but I thought I'd write a bit of a journal as well because I've been fairly hush-hush about the details until now (mainly because I was scared of psyching myself out - usually if I make a big announcement about a big project, I end up abandoning it because I put too much pressure on myself, haha). But now it's here, I'm very happy to announce Nerblesocks-Adopts, a collaborative adoptable account run by myself and the delightful IncreasinglyCoherent!

It's been a really long time coming. IncreasinglyCoherent and I have been dabbling with the idea for about two years - we've had a couple of false starts (which is why the account itself is 2 years old, haha) and this most recent and actually successful attempt has been a process that's taken us most of this year so far to get organised.

Most of the reason that it's taken so long is that, well, it turns out I had a lot to learn about collaborating! A lot of this time has been dedicated to conquering my procrastinatory tendencies, learning to step back and hand over the reins sometimes, and working out how to balance my occasional overzealousness and make sure we both had equal input on everything rather than me rushing ahead in my enthusiasm to get things done...and subsequently actually ADDING time in revisions.

Over the past couple of months, though, the process started to run pretty smoothly and we found the balance we needed! I couldn't have come even close to finishing the infosheets and the artwork itself without Lubby's incredibly valuable input: creature concepts, design drafts, colour scheme improvements, and SO much of the composition and layout work - I am no graphic designer! She's also been an amazing critical eye, helping me to make the designs and individual pictures the best I can make them.

Our first available original species, Geckles, are her concept, and it's been an absolute joy bringing them to life. They've come a long way since our first conversation in the car when they were tentatively dubbed 'crystal babies' and we started weaving together the basic ideas of their lore!

I've got a few concepts of my own that I will hopefully be fleshing out and uploading pictures of both here and on the adopts account, and I'm very excited about a lot of them! It's an opportunity to do more things with the various creature designs I doodle up and usually abandon. The idea of those designs going to good homes rather than being lost to my doodle pile makes me really happy and I'm hoping there are people out there who will be interested in owning them!

So yeah! If you're into adoptables and are interested in ours, go check out: :iconnerblesocks-adopts: - there are a few things uploaded there already, and lots more to come in future, both auctions and more original species sheets! In time we'll have a decent spread of closed and open species, as well as human, fantasy humanoids and mythical creature auctions.

To those of my watchers who aren't into the adopts thing, fear not! I know I've been somewhat absent over the past month or two, but that is as much due to a sudden influx of commission work as adoptable preparation. Now the intensive aspect of the account setup is over, and I've cleared my commission slots, I'm gonna have plenty of time to draw more of my usual fanart and fantasy. <3

So yeah, that's the news! Have any of you guys been working on any big (or little) projects of your own? I'd love to hear what you've been working on!

- Socket

Sorry for the quietness!

Thu Jun 11, 2015, 2:10 PM

Hey, all. Sorry that my upload schedule has sort of...not...been an upload schedule at all, haha. Without the structure of the Daily Pokémon Doodle constantly pushing me into "Get Stuff Finished Today, Dude!!!" mode, I've been starting loads of things and then not finishing them!

Also I've had an influx of commissions, which has been super fun but has also taken priority over my fanworks and original art of my own. I've nearly worked my way through them though, so soon I should have time to spend on my own things!

(I've also been working on a few pictures of our snake with IncreasinglyCoherent! It's been pretty interesting, two of them are redraws of the pictures we were originally planning to do stuff with in 2013, but got sidetracked - probably because of my procrastination habits! Luckily this time the project is getting seen through to completion because I'm not such a doof, haha.)

But yeah! Apologies for being pretty patchy in how much I'm around and making art at the moment, I'll kick myself into shape soon once I'm done with all these other things!

wrist update #2 - i'm back!

Fri Apr 24, 2015, 9:27 AM

So, as it turns out, all my wrist needed was some extra strength painkiller/anti-inflammatory gel. (Which could have been prescribed or at least suggested to me by the doctor, but for some reason he never even went there??) It's feeling fine now! It's crazy that I've had to put up with the wrist/hand ache intermittently for like a month and that's all it needed all along.

And of course, that means I'm drawing again! Finally managed to take my commissions off pause and get one of them finished, and I can get to work on everything else I want to do as well now! Man, it feels good to be able to draw again. I get so restless when my drawing hand is taken out of action, it's like suddenly all the things I was eh about drawing I REALLY WANT TO DRAW just because I'm not able to, haha.

So yeah! I'm gonna keep sticking the gel on it for a few days, try to go gentle on it, then stop using the gel and see how it's feeling then! Hopefully it'll all be cleared up. I'm still getting a desk, though! This scare has definitely taught me that I ought to be looking after myself when it comes to drawing, so I really want to improve my posture and get a better setup instead of always being sat here cross-legged on a bed.

Hope you guys are all doing well! :) I'll hopefully be able to make the Big Adoptables Announcement in a few more days now that I'm back to work...

wrist update

Mon Apr 20, 2015, 6:43 AM

Okay, I'm probably gonna be quiet on the art front a little longer possibly. Still getting wrist pain at the moment and it's driving me up the wall - it's not super bad or anything but I don't want to push it and end up hurting something more badly.

No idea what it is at present, going to the doctor about it was both inconclusive and super frustrating because the doctor seemed basically either unconvinced or unconcerned. Hopefully we'll figure something out.

In the mean time, we're going to be buying me a proper desk to work at (to see if posture is the problem - sitting cross-legged on a bed is probably not the best setup for my back which might be having an effect on my arms) and try to get me an appointment with a different and cooler doctor who will be more likely to figure the issue out.

I'll probably be back with art soon anyway - it's only intermittent pain so when it's feeling okay I'm more than happy to draw - but it might be a little patchy in how much I'm able to upload until the problem either goes away by itself or we get to the bottom of the issue.
